Is there a need of Inter-faith Dialogue in Mindanao?
By: Christian Jay Tardo
The
population of Mindanao is consisting of 24% of the Philippine population.[1] I
was raised in Mindanao almost my entire life and I witness the war between
tribes, religions and beliefs. In the midst of all of these, people are asking:
How do we break and end this cycle? As the Church how can we contribute in
breaking and ending this vicious cycle?
In
my observation, “Interfaith dialogue” is one of the options that has not yet
explored by the Churches in Mindanao. Interfaith dialogue is a cooperative, constructive and positive
interaction between people of different religious
traditions, either spiritual or humanistic beliefs, at the individual, communal and
institutional levels. It involves and promotes understanding between different
religions or beliefs to increase acceptance of others, rather than to create new
beliefs.[2]
Or we can describe interfaith
dialogue as:
- DOES go beyond tolerance toward
mutual respect.
- Does
NOT teaches
that all religions are essentially the same.
- DOES help people learn to
lead in a pluralistic society.
- Does
NOT dilute
or destroy religious convictions.
- DOES invite everyone to be honest
and open about their own beliefs, questions, and religious identity.
- Does
NOT provides
an opportunity for religious groups to proselytize or impose their beliefs
on others.
- DOES focus on shared values
and commitments to the common good of the people in the society.[3]
Advantages
of Inter-faith dialogue
- It cultivates
people into a deeper sense of their own religious identity while
building relationships with people who are different.
- Equips
people with skills to navigate in a religiously and
culturally diverse world.
- Helps
people become more articulate about their own worldviews,
beliefs, and values.
- Develops
a sense of mutual trust, respect, shared values, and understanding across
religious traditions, thus reducing religiously motivated violence,
stereotyping, bigotry, or hatred.
- Unites
people across faith and ideological lines with a shared
commitment to nurturing the lives of young people.[4]
Challenges in
Interfaith Dialogue in Mindanao
·
Churches and church leaders are not yet open for the idea of interfaith
dialogue.
·
Lack of understand about inter-faith dialogue with other religions.
·
Churches and church leaders are lack of vision for the society; they
just want to focus on the church and its business.
·
Fundamentalism is rampant among different religions.
The need of Inter-faith Dialogue in Mindanao
Mindanao is a place where several religions and beliefs are practice. Each
one is exercising their freedom as citizen of the country. In my observation,
there are 20% Muslims, 70% Christians, 10% other Religions. However, we cannot
deny the fact that there are also a lot of extremist in their faith, for
example the Muslims/Islam that is connected to the Abusayaf, BangsaMoro Freedom
Fighters (BFF), Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), etc. The animist that is associated
to the Ilaga, Anting-antingan, etc. The Socialist that is related to the
National People’s Army, and even some armed Christian extremist that are
willing to die and kill for the sake of their beliefs in some places in
Cotabato. These religions and beliefs contributed to the
socio-political-economic situation of Mindanao. However, there is big gap in
understanding each religion and because of that there is no appreciation and
acceptance. Instead, each religion is trying to dominate and oppress other
religions. For example in Davao, wherein almost 80% are Christians[5], consider the Muslims as 2nd
class citizen. On the other hand, in Maguindanao wherein 90% are Muslims[6], consider the Christian as
2nd class citizen. Most of the places in Mindanao are dominated by
the Christians. However, the minority Muslims are controlling the majority due
to the terroristic and violent threats. Can this vicious cycle end? Is there a
hope for long lasting peace in Mindanao?
Conclusion
After considering the situation and the benefits of interfaith dialogue I
do believe that there is greater need of Inter-Faith dialogue between religions
and in my opinion it should be initiated by the Christian Churches and Organizations
since majority of the population are Christians. On the other hand, I do acknowledge
also the challenges and even the consequences of this idea. However, for a long
lasting peace and development understanding each other and appreciation of diversified
society is the key to move to that direction and Inter-faith dialogue contributes
to that idea.
Questions to Consider:

2.
How does inter-faith dialogue look like in your context?
3.
To those who oppose the idea of inter-faith dialogue, what could be the possible
contribution/s of the church to the vicious cycle in Mindanao?

I think it's a good idea. In my context, we don't need to do it because the conflicts among religions are not serious enough to be resolved by interfaith dialogue.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the Inter-faith Dialogue has advantages for believers of Jesus Christ;
ReplyDeleteIt help people into a deeper sense of their own religious identity while building relationships with people who are different beliefs.
Equips people with skills to navigate in a religiously and culturally diverse world.
Helps people become more articulate about their own worldviews, beliefs, and values.
Develops a sense of mutual trust, respect, shared values, and understanding across religious traditions, thus reducing religiously motivated violence, stereotyping, bigotry, or hatred.
You have good reasons. May God bless you. Mini
I agree with an inter-faith dialogue but if it will be initiated by Christians we have to be careful with the terms and conditions that will be possibly violated by Christian themselves. For example it will not be good if a condition in the inter-faith dialogue will be the prohibition of converting from one religion to another. This would be impossible for Christians to follow since we are called to disciple all nations. One good provision would be noncompulsion to convert or not convert from your religion. And the prohibition of family Interfaith dialogue is a good solution but I don't think it is a complete and the only solution. The blog mentions about how Christians look down on Muslims if they are the majority in the area. Maybe we can campaign among Christians to extend lovde and respect to Muslim as every human deserves. We cannot do much to control how the Muslim extremists or mainstream will act but since Christians are still the majority why not we work within instead.
ReplyDeleteCautious interfaith dialogue instigated by Christians is necessary to avoid compromises of absolute truths.I believe dialogues still work even in Mindanao but it should be done within set of boundaries agreed by both parties.
ReplyDeleteInter-faith dialogue is one area where we can seek to initiate and develop among different faiths and communities in my country and is still one of the major challenges to embark on. The need for having inter-faith dialogue has become so crucial that churches and religious bodies are becoming so intolerant nowadays that they often find themselves fighting against each other. The need for having inter-faith dialogues can be no greater than now ever.
ReplyDeleteI've read it already kuya.
ReplyDeleteFirst i wanna know what comes in your mind why u come out with that kind of dialogue?
I know that u knew in the first place that it can really raise arguments as to how church has been raised and cultivated.
If i'm gonna impart my knowledge as a human being. In our Adamic nature i could really say CONGRATULATIONS for the idea and for having these burden and desire to unite each religion and denomination that exists and allow such to knew and value the importance of unity and acceptance.
However kuya we both knew that God is not after with these external evidences: i remember Nicodemus known to be a religious man: name them all; ethics, morals, character, leadership skill and etc...
But what's hurting about his life is that he don't knew and almost forgotten the foundation because of his profound knowledge and his ability to chase after external evidences and what can people say.
This is my SON in whom I am well pleased, hear ye Him.
Jesus said: i tell you the truth unless a man is born again he cannot the kingdom of God.
Jesus said: I am the way, the truth, and the life.
When God will look at HIS people it is now that i understood that nothing we can do that will please HIM.
Cause not even one strand of our hair is perfect but Jesus Himself and alone.
So when the final day will come.
HE won't require anything but HIS SON
Not our church as being united, how we grow, or what have we done; but the church himself which is us.
The bible says: Don't you knew that you are the temple of God and that the Holy Spirit lives in you.
and lastly: so therefore let us all fix our eyes on Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.
God bless sa dialogue mo kuya.

I agree with interfaith dialogue. It is very good thing that Christian should initiate these things in their midst as well as try in other religions as well. Great work.
ReplyDelete1. What do you think are the positive and negative consequences of this idea?
ReplyDeletePositive: Promotes peace and understanding
Negative: May lead to pluralism when people are not clear about the truth
2. How does inter-faith dialogue look like in your context?
They look like people gathering together and talking.
3. To those who oppose the idea of inter-faith dialogue, what could be the possible contribution/s of the church to the vicious cycle in Mindanao?
I'm not against inter-faith dialogue, but here are things they can do: Prayer, relief work, helping in peace operations.
I agree to this idea and I believe that this necessary not just in Mindanao but also to some places in the Philippines. My present employer-an NGO, is already starting this inter-faith dialogue in Mindanao and it was a success. I hope that it will continue and eventually will bring peace to Mindanao.
ReplyDeleteThis is very important especially in Mindanao. Inter-faith dialogue between Christians and Muslims can keep Mindanao a peaceful place to live in. This can start in local churches and families within Muslim areas. I believe that this is possible by God's grace.
