Child Abuse in Nepal

Nepal is a male dominated society, where women are treated second citizen of the country. Nepal ha a high rate of child abuse. Child neglect is not a crime in Nepal but it is recognized in the Children's Act. Severe child abuse is outlawed in Nepal but is not considered a state crime.  No child is to be subjected to torture or cruel treatment. There is mine beating from the parents, teacher are not consider violation of law in Nepal. There is punishment for behaving cruelly to child. The child abuser is also required by law to pay a reasonable amount of compensation to the child. This law was passed by the Parliament in April 2002, but the child abuse is still very active in society because the law was not enacted by the government because of unsteady political situation in Nepal.
The girl child population in Nepal are half of the child population. The half population generally distribution to the different of Nepal, are mostly lives in rural areas. The Interim Constitution of Nepal, 2007 and international human rights instruments which Nepal has ratified, especially the CEDAW and Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), has provided equal rights to all girls, irrespective of caste, religion and gender. But reality is very far from that the legal has provided for this girls. Boys and girls are not in the equal level in day to day life. If girls come in a family then they consider as burden to parents and family but in same family boy comes then it is celebration for whole family, society. Girls are neglected, humiliated, oppressed and exploited in their everyday life. This unfair social status produces unequal structure in the society, which creates very miserable situation of girls in Nepal. Social attitude towards girls is still very regressive. Majority of girls are still out of care, education, health service, and other basic services right from the birth. Girls were raised in an environment, where they cannot grow physical and cognitive and other aspect of their life. They are not safe inside the home and out the home. They are in such an atmosphere that are obstruct for girls to develop overall.
Almost 40 per cent of girls have experienced sexual abuse and rape are below 18 years. They are abused at home, in school, work places and other places. (CWIN 2008)  34 per cent of marriages in Nepal are below girls 16 years old. And other 7 per cent of child marriages take place with children below 10 years. (UNICEF 2005). Girls are trafficked for different purposes including domestic work, forced beggary, marriage, and carpet weaving and sex trade. About 20 per cent which is 40,000 of the total trafficked women for sex trade are girls below 16 years. (CWIN 2006) early 12,000 girl children and women are trafficked. (ILO, 2001). Now those girls and women are now being trafficked to the Middle East, South-east Asia and also to Europe.

In this critical situation, if we will not take any immediate steps then we cannot secure the future of those girls. And we will also cannot secure the life, who will became women and mother.

Question:
  1. How Christian can brings the concept of equality in Bible to Nepali society about men and women?
  2. What is the responsibility of Christian people to stop women trafficking in Nepal?
  3. If a girl is in sex trade to support her family in this situation what will be your ethical stand?

  1. yes indeed. Nepal is a the high rate of Child abuse and trafficking. there are many laws and rights for the child to protect them but due to illiteracy and poverty, they are unaware about the these rights. this cause most of the child to be the victim of abuse and trafficking. we need ro act in every possible way to stop this kind of crime

  2. In the world all women are facing these problems but in Asia the rate is higher. The church should take part to teach ethics to new generations. if we christian will not take the part to develop our society, we can not develop Christ-like character in the people.

  4. Christians definitely have responsibilities to share Gospel especially that God loves each of us. What would be hindrance and difficulties for non-Christian Nepali people to listen to and accept those Gospels? Their tradition and Hinduism teaching?

Also, how mothers of girls do react to those situations? They just let their daughters abused? Maybe Christian people can start working with those mothers, change their mindsets first as mothers are so influential to their kids?

  6. They need to know Christ as Lord and Savior, because only when their hearts are changed and their minds renewed, can their behaviour towards women and children change. That being said, we as Christians need to do our part in reaching out in love, persevering in our efforts, and relentless in our prayer as we share Christ to them.

It may not be a massive effort or campaign, but we can do it by the power of the Holy Spirit, one opportunity, one moment, one act, one life at a time.

    Nothing is impossible with God.

  8. You have done good job!! it is really a true in the nepal!! Actually this is great challenge in nepal that child are abusing from their own family, friends and relatives which is really sad things.People are treating as like animals or lower than dog which need to be avoided. The women, girls, are dominated and treated also as like donkey.this is really needed to be transformed and need to bring great reviable in our country nepal.
Actually,it will not be stoped,if we dont take responsibility. So as a child of God orfollower of Christ,we know that man and women are created in the same image and same purpose. We both are complement for each other. So we have to provide this information in our villages, society. Also regarding to the human traffecking also connected with discriminate. So at first we have to provide them right teaching about the value of women to the society.I know it is not easy but shold take step for it.Only after that,We can bring great transformation in our county with grat change in people's mindset.
I believe that we can do everything in the name of Jesus and power of holy spirit.
Nothing is impossible in his Name!!!

  9. it is sad to hear the condition there. As a Christian, we not only bring the gospel to the people, but also transform their thinking. there are several things we can do to educate the mind of parents, such as, the church should stand up to speak the truth, the Christian organization should advocate the truth concerning this. try to use the power of media and internet to educate the mind, the more they read, they will graduate change. As people stand up strongly against evil, eventually they will hide and escape. luke

  10. I think we can do something to protect children by teaching for parents know how to protect their children. The most important we need to do is share gospel to them and by the power of God’s word will change their life and they can see value of their child.

  12. I am not fully aware of the dynamics, society and culture of Nepal to give a wise perspective but what i did learn which may be useful is to use the means of education. A lot of ministries use this powerful tool to educate people in all areas of life to promote awareness specially on the healthy families, which include campus crusade for Christ, World Vision, Open Doors and also International Justice Mission. It would be wise for Nepal believers to partner with these organizations with the aim to educate Nepal to overcome this world-wide concern.

Its obvious that as a society, we should shield our families away from harm... And one way to provide people to stay away from these harmful ways of living is to allow people to have opportunities that will keep them from having to make difficult decisions. A group called Liberty Street Clothing in Manila is keeeping people from troubled pasts and backgrounds away from their past by providing them a business opportunity at the sme time promoting awareness of their fight to keep children, women and families away from harm, crime, and their difficult past.

  13. I believe Nepali Christian men will a very important role in bringing the Biblical perspective of gender equality in Nepal. They should be willing to risk possible opposition or ridicule from friends and relatives.Christian should treat Nepali women well and show them that they are highly valued by God as with men. Nepali husbands can set good examples to other Nepali by treating their wives with love and care as a lifetime partner.

  14. Thank you Bro Santosh for sharing the situation in Nepal. I believe that if Christians boldly teach the love and grace of Jesus in Nepal, the power of God is there to change this nation. In fact, positive changes have already taken place through the work of Hosanna Bible Church in the setting up of the Badi Girls homes for girls from this village who are being rescued from a life of prostitution. The girls are brought up by loving men and women of God, they are brought up in the way of the Lord and they are given an education to prepare them for a profession - perhaps as a nurse, teacher, doctor, lawyer. These girls will grow up with a strong identity that they are beloved of God. That they have a good Heavenly Father who loves them, protects them, takes care of them and sees them as His princesses. When men are taught the love and grace of God in the same way - start seeing themselves and the women in society as God's beloved, God's special children, it will change the society!! God bless!
