Human Population Control Is it Right or Wrong? by Wailes Rangsa

Population Control Right or Wrong!

Human population control is the practice of artificially altering the rate of growth of a human population”.[1] In other word, the idea mean birth rate must be decrease or the death rate must be increase.[2] Human population control worldwide became active throughout the 1960s and 1970s by the Governments’ mandate as a response to the factors of increasing level of poverty, environmental concerns, religious reasons, and overpopulation.[3] But in 1980s Human population control faced challenges because of women’s reproductive rights as a part of a human rights.[4] Growing opposition to the narrow population control focus led to a significant change in population control policies in the early 1990s.[5]

Though worldwide the governments implements several policies to control human population growth, “according to the United Nations, world population reached 7 Billion on October 31, 2011.[6] And if the current world birthrate 1.14% per year, continues the United Nations estimated that by 2024 the world population will reach about 8 billion.[7]

The birth rate is higher in the development countries like in Bangladesh, the birth rate according the report of Population Reference Bureau, Washington in 1965-1975 was 3 percent[8] but recently the birth rate estimated 2.45.[9] Though the birth rate decrease, the population still increasing because of the medical facilities and health awareness death rate become decrease also.[10] Moreover, for me, several factors are making impact in increasing population in Bangladesh. First, the people think the idea of population control is foreign policy that is why people should not corporate with this movement. Second, God has created human that is why we should not worry about reproducing the generations. Third, people think man is power, more man more power. Finally, people think it is not good sign to not have a baby for a couple.
As I do research on population control, I have found there are many advantages stated and explained in favor of population control (e.g., prevent from starvation, civil violence and war, political stability, and good life).[11]  In addition, the numerous books and articles’ title like, the Population Bomb, Population, Over Population, The War Against Population[12]and The 9 Lives of Population Control[13] are also see the growing population as a problem.
On the other hand, the Roman Catholic Church is always protests all the policies and practices (e.g., abortion, sterilization, and contraception as a general practice) of Population Control because its break the natural and divine law.[14] Because of extreme (one child policy, and no child policy) Human Population Control in some countries people are decreasing dramatically. I have heard from one of my friends that in their country because of one child policy, now the elderly people is more than the young generations, this situation signifies that after few years there will be huge generation gap, and the population will decrease dramatically.
Moreover, in the Bible God said, in Genesis 1:28, God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground." In this passage God clearly blessed people to increase in number that is why when we talk about Population Control, does it contradict with the passage? Or when God said this did He have a certain number which is already excesses? Or when we say over population than what is the ideal population number for this current world? The bottom line Population Control is right or wrong?

  1. it is good to read this writing. somehow if God cares the birds and then how much He needs to care the human beings, those are in His images. May be people will ask, who will care for my children? i will ask them when they were child who was caring them God or their Parents. of course God and He provided parent to take care. There are many orphan children, who is providing them their needs, surly God. He is the creator and knows How to handle the situations. Thank for this writing. God bless you.

    1. woo good questions my brother, what i understand about the God's provision i want to share through this verse, prophet David shared his experiences of life, "I was young and now i am old. yet i have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread" Psalm 37:21 i want to mentioned that in the time of David, the children of the righteous need not to go hungry because others believers can help them in their needs and one more reason in David's time Israel obeyed God's law that ensured that the poor were treated fairly as long as Israel was fair with the law, they had enough food for everyone, and when they forgot the God's law, the poor suffered. do you know how much food is wasted in America, Germany, Australasia, Europe, in others christian countries and even in Muslim countries? Please go and check the detail how much they waste food. problem is not in the provision of God brother, it is about the selfishness of human beings. what do you think about these verse "The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing." Psalm 34:10. what do you think about the God's provision in the desert to Israel in the book of Exodus. Does Bible teach to ignore the poor people or hungry people. let me ask one more question if God is providing us our all needs, it is not our duty to help the needy people in their needs and if all the world keep this chain who will be hungry and die. God is still proving but the greed of people is not allow them to give others. have a blessed talk God bless you

  3. This is a complicated issue indeed. Coming from a populous country myself I have heard many people advocating for population control. Whereas there are countries who have negative population growth and are encouraging people to reproduce. Hence it seems to be an unresolvable that we must live with.

  4. I am still believe that God planed for us to produce children and children are a God's blessing for parents. So I do not agree with Population Control. Yet, we have many reasons and in different situations, but I cannot fully say it is right. It is not easy to apply it in many cases, even in my family. Mini

  5. It's truly that this is debatable. In my own opinion, some cases of this discussion about growing population on earth would not matter on one side explanation only. If either this is right or wrong. But this is a matter of how we can respond on this area in a right manner, and that is a matter of responsibility in every section of life of people. On other hand, controlling population is not wrong if the government would implement this on every family. But it depends on how they would look at this in their beliefs and perspectives of life. Moreover, people would also practically benefit at the end, even if they would follow or not. For example here in the Philippines, although our government has a program for every family on how to handle their family planning, which is a reproduction, the Philippines government did not prohibit them to control them in increasing their clan, however, Filipino people are taught also to be responsible on their behalf. Meaning, the government allows them to do as much as they want, but they have to make sure that they are also able to raise their family without any problems would come out. And that is the deal. Furthermore, of course in some points, We don't have right to say that "We need to control the growth of population," because this is from the Lord works. This is not ours. Only we can do is that we need to be responsible of what God has given to us. NOTE: Thank you Wailes for allowing me to be part of this matter. God bless you!..

  6. yes, God cares all of his people who take birth in this world, i agree with this concept but in other hand God has given wisdom also to think what is right and what is wrong. we have to use our wisdom to control population of this world. May God help all of us to use the wisdom that he has given to us

  7. Population control is ethical if this will bring welfare to the people, but if it is only for business then that is the problem.

  8. Before the Fall, God bless Adam and Eve to be fruitful and increase in number and I never learn that God never curse on population of the human after the Fall.
Our responsibility is to be fruitful and in crease number and to obey what God want to do in our lives. God never allows same sex marriage and performing sex act on animals. It makes contradict with the Bible. God has already given us wisdom and knowledge how to manage in our family and how to get family plan.

  9. A friend of mine (with 6 children) said something like "it is up to God to stop giving me children. Many couples have prayed and tried hard to have children but don't have any. So on my part I should be happy if I am given more children." I see the problem of a fast growing population especially among those living in the poverty level. It would not be a problem if the government is capable of helping big families but that is not happening in my country (Philippines). So yes we should be finding ways to avoid a fast rise in the population especially among the poor. And I don't we are violating God's command of being fruiful and multiply because I don't think God wanted man to multiply until every inch on earth is filled with man.

  10. I’m a little bit crazy thinking about the issue. Why we are spending our valuable time discussing such issue. Before making any comment we should consider who created human? Who crated God or man himself? And before saying human population right or wrong, we should understand the purpose of the human being! If we understand the ultimate purpose of the human we will not listen to such debate or issue but live a God design life.
